Also known as the Watermelon Capital of the world!
The city of Cordele, GA, founded in 1888 by J.E.D. Shipp of Americus, owes much of its success to the two major railroads that run through it. Named after Cordelia Hawkins, the town prospered due to the railroads' presence, and eventually became the seat of government for Crisp County. In 1930, Cordele became home to the first county-owned electric system, the Crisp County Hydroelectric System, which continues to operate today. Additionally, Lake Blackshear, created as a result of the hydroelectric plant, has become a popular spot for waterfront properties. Finally, in 1968, a Titan missile was erected at the intersection of I-75 and U.S. 280 East
