In 1879, a preliminary county seat charter was adopted, and a generous 50-acre land donation by A.C. Butts was made for an administrative hub located in the center of the county. The name chosen for this new center was Moultrie, honoring Revolutionary War hero General William Moultrie.
By 1900, thanks to the efforts of local businessmen, bankers, and speculators, the county had transformed into an agriculturist's utopia. The previously forested area was cleared, and development firms began dividing the land into farm tracts. Skilled farmers from North Georgia and the Carolinas were invited to develop the land, and today, the county's agriculture industry continues to prosper.
