Coffee County was formed on February 9, 1854 by an act of the Georgia General Assembly, taking portions from Clinch, Irwin, Telfair, and Ware counties. The county seat of Coffee County was named Douglas in 1855.
The arrival of the railroad in 1895 spurred enough growth for Douglas to become a city on December 10, 1895. The Georgia and Florida Railway established its offices in Douglas in 1909.
The Eleventh District Agricultural & Mechanical School was founded in Douglas in 1906, while South Georgia College was founded in 1927 as Georgia's first state-supported junior college.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Douglas was a major tobacco market in Georgia, but in 2017, peanuts became the top agricultural crop in the area.
Visitors can learn more about Douglas's history at the Heritage Station Museum, housed in the former Georgia and Florida Railway train station downtown.
Douglas has three historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places: downtown, Gaskin Avenue, and the WWII 63rd Army-Air Forces Contract Pilot Training School (Primary) Air Base.
