The cheapest move is the one that fits the actual load.

Campus controls the schedule and access. Verify check-in location, unloading time, parking, vehicle restrictions, elevators/stairs, what furniture is already supplied, and whether outside movers are permitted in the exact area/timeslot.

ASU move-in can involve organized check-in and limited unloading access around residence buildings. That means the move should be packed for quick identification and efficient unloading. Students and parents should know the residence, current check-in procedure and where the vehicle is expected to go after unloading before the moving crew arrives.
How to Make College Move-In Day Easier
Complete Check-In First
Do not assume the crew can start unloading just because the truck reached campus. The student may need keys, credentials or another check-in step first.
Know the Current Vehicle Rules
Residence-hall parking and unloading rules can be different from normal apartment access. Check trailers, box trucks, loading zones and time limits before scheduling.
Label for the Student
Use the student's name, residence hall or apartment, room/unit and item destination. That is much more useful on a busy campus than a box marked only “bedroom.”
Organize for Fast Unloading
When unloading windows are tight, the load should not require ten minutes of sorting before each item comes off the truck.
Keep First-Night Essentials Out
ID, medication, laptop, chargers, keys, bedding, toiletries and other immediate necessities should stay with the student instead of getting buried in the moving load.
Do Not Bring What Housing Already Provides
Check the assigned room's furniture and appliance information before hauling duplicates to campus.

Who's Paying?
HHG needs to know who will sign/authorize and how payment will be handled. Local balances are generally due at completion; longer-distance terms follow the written quote.
Who's Making Decisions?
If a parent is paying but the student is onsite, decide who can approve added services, storage or other changes if the move differs from the original scope.
Who's Keeping What?
Roommate furniture causes mistakes. Clearly identify the student's belongings before the crew arrives, especially in shared living rooms and kitchens.
Storage Can Be the Missing Middle of a Student Move
Major college-moving resources treat summer storage as its own problem because students often change housing more frequently than traditional households. In South Georgia, the same problem shows up between dorms, apartments, summer terms, internships, study abroad and graduation.
Summer Break
If returning to the same area next semester, hauling furniture all the way home and back may not make sense. Compare the move/storage cost with the real round-trip alternative.
Lease Gap
Move out Friday; next lease starts Tuesday. HHG can discuss moving into climate-controlled warehouse storage and later delivering to the new place.
Study Abroad / Internship
If the student will be away temporarily, separate essentials traveling with the student from furniture/household items that need a safe interim plan.
Valdosta State explicitly says it does not provide on-campus storage between certain academic terms.
VSU's 2026 summer housing information states there are no campus facilities for storing student belongings between Spring and Summer or between Summer and Fall. That's exactly the type of school-specific gap students should identify before move-out week.

Label Ownership, Not Just Rooms
“Kitchen” tells us where a box came from. “JORDAN · KITCHEN · NEW APT” tells us whose it is and where it goes. Shared apartments need more specific labeling.
Decide Shared Furniture Early
Who owns the couch? Who bought the TV stand? Is the dining table staying? Settle shared-item ownership before the movers are waiting for an answer.
Separate Destinations
If one student's items go to storage, another to parents and another to a new apartment, physically separate or clearly mark them before loading.
Protect the Security Deposit
Finish the move early enough to clean, photograph the unit and complete the landlord's move-out process instead of loading until the final minute.
Pack for the Space You're Going To—not the House You're Leaving
Check What Is Provided
Dorms and furnished student apartments may already include a bed, desk, chair, dresser or living-room furniture. Verify before buying or moving duplicates.
Coordinate Appliances
Ask roommates and housing what is allowed/provided before bringing duplicate microwaves, mini-fridges or other appliances.
Keep a Student Essentials Bag
Carry identification, medication, keys, phone/chargers, laptop, school information, toiletries, bedding and a change of clothes yourself.
Label Everything
Student name + residence/unit + room + destination is better than “bedroom.” This matters even more during shared moves and busy campus days.
Don't Pack Prohibited Items
School housing rules and mover transportation restrictions are different lists. Check both before packing chemicals, candles, weapons, certain appliances or other restricted goods.
Take Move-In Photos
For apartments, photograph existing damage before unloading. For dorms, follow the school's room-condition/check-in process so preexisting damage is documented.

Should I bring furniture to a furnished dorm?

What if the campus does not allow a moving truck?
