Start with official channels (do this first)

  1. Orders in hand. TMO will not book government HHG without them.
  2. Counseling at origin TMO and in Defense Personal Property System (move.mil).
  3. New one-stop PCS site: Personal Property Activity (ppa.mil).
  4. If you want a PPM, get DD Form 2278 approved before you rent a truck or hire us. Unauthorized PPM = no reimbursement.

Two different moves (do not mix them up)

1. Government household goods (HHG on a GBL)

TMO books a contracted carrier. You do not pick HHG Movers for that shipment unless TMO assigned it. Claims and weight allowance live in DPS. Start at move.mil.

2. Personally Procured Move (PPM / old DITY)

You rent the truck or POD. You hire who you want. The government reimburses up to what it would have paid a contractor, based on certified weight tickets. This is the job we do every week in Valdosta.

PPM checklist we see families miss:

  • Approval on DD 2278 first.
  • Empty and full weight tickets — no tickets, weak or zero payout. Keep both.
  • Receipts: truck, fuel, packing, tolls, our invoice.
  • Submit through finance / DFAS SmartVoucher when your finance office uses it.
  • Weight estimator on move.mil before you guess a 26-foot truck.

You can split it: government ships the household, you PPM the high-value / need-now load. We will load whichever pile you point at.

How to keep a PPM near the 3-hour minimum

  • Boxes closed before we arrive. Loose kitchen = extra clock.
  • Reserve the truck the day before. We cannot load an empty reservation.
  • Tell us stairs, third-floor, piano, safe, treadmill when you book. No bulky surprise fee — we staff it.
  • If you are loading, have blankets and straps in the truck. If the rental is short on pads, say so.
  • We pack a rental so it rides I-75. We cannot promise a 26-foot will swallow a 4-bedroom. Weight tickets still rule the reimbursement, not “it looked full.”

Peak: last week of May through August. Book the crew when orders drop, not the Friday before report date. Local and dedicated ranges.

Claims, valuation, and the fine print people skip

Government HHG claims go through the official process in DPS / TMO — not through us.

When you hire HHG Movers on a PPM or local job:

  • Full-service on our truck: released value $0.60/lb/article unless you buy full-value.
  • Labor-only on your U-Haul or POD: our cargo valuation does not follow that rental. We still carry workers’ comp and liability.

That is why a lot of families PPM the “need it this week” rooms with us and let the government ship the rest.
